On 10 February, 2010, Wednesday, the second day of the 83rd Plenary Session of the Committee of the Regions, Mercedes Bresso was elected the Committee's President. She is the first woman to have been given this post.
Mercedes Bresso comes from Italy and represents the Piedmont region. She was a long-term member of the Committee of the Regions and leader of the Party of European Socialists (PSE), as well as a MEP.
In her programme, the President of the Committee of the Regions supports implementation of the renewed Lisbon Strategy and formulation of a common future vision of the cohesion policy. Also, she has declared to actively participate in building a long-term and trust-based dialogue between the Mediterranean and Eastern European countries.
Among the key objectives to be addressed in the course of her term, Mercedes Bresso mentioned the following: implementation of a new legal instrument being the European Territorial Cooperation Group (ETCG), prevention of the effects of climate change, improvement of the cohesion policy, and consideration of local communities' interests. In her inauguration speech, the new President also underscored the role of active cooperation between border regions.
Mercedes Bresso's first deputy is Ramón Luis Siso, member of the EPP and representative of the Spanish region of Murcia.
